Orphan Boy Book Reviews & Testimonials

Going for the Gold, The History of the Phoenix Mine in Colorado DVD

This 40 minute DVD is a fascinating documentary about one of the few remaining family operated gold mines left in Colorado.

Started during Colorado's Glory Days in the 1880s, this mine has been in the Mosch family for three generations.

This DVD is the perfect compliment to The Orphan Boy, A Love Affair with Mining.

The Orphan Boy, A Love Affair with Mining is a book about a man who pursued his dream of being a miner. An educated man, a graduate geologist, this man orchestrated the reopening of a mine, after World War II, that was first opened in the 1880s. He followed a dream pursued by few at that time and even fewer today.

The mine is located along the Continental Divide at 12,000 feet in one of Colorado’s richest mining districts. You will read about this man’s life as a young lad, as a college graduate, a World War II pilot and then his journey to the Orphan Boy mine.

You will view interesting photos, and read about the difficulties encountered in locating and reopening the mine. As one reader notes, “there are details in this book about mining, at the time of the reopening and 60 years earlier in the 1880s, which make it a very interesting read.”

You will enjoy “living the experience” of the crews working to reopen the Orphan Boy at such high elevation. There are explanations of the challenges required to extract and transport the lead-silver-zinc ore from the mine to the smelter. In the end, there is a finality of the Orphan Boy, which makes for a very interesting twist-of-events for the man and his dream.

As a bonus, this book includes a DVD with maps, historical documents and photographs about the mine and the area. This spectacular area is a four-wheelers, ATVers, hikers and bicyclers dream, which the author wants to share.

But, most important, the author wants to share the story of his father, Herbert Thompson Young. He was an unusual and interesting man who impacted lives by pursuing his dream and destiny in a very unique way.
